Fishing in Northern Vermont & Southern Quebec

The fishing in Lake Champlain and the Winooski River in Northwestern Vermont are superb. If you throw a line into the Lake , you are never sure what you might pull out- besides the usual mix of Smallmouth and Largemouth bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, Pickerel, Rock bass, Crappies, Bluegills, Green sunfish, and Yellow and White perch, you may get a one of the more butt- ugly residents of the Lake, such as a Gar, Ling, Sheepshead , Eels, Bowfin, or who knows- maybe even Champ. Out in the deeper water ( Lake Champlain in about 400 feet deep at it's greatest depth) you will find Lake trout and Sturgeon.

In the Winooski River , you will find the usual warm-water mix of fish, in addition to Landlocked Salmon in the fall.

The The Lamoille River also has a nice mix of warmwater fish.

Go south on Rte 7 in Vermont to Vergennes and Middlebury to fish Otter Creek , and North on Rte 7 to Highgate, just before the Canadian border, to fish the Rock River

Some proven (which I am defining as I have caught fish on them) fly patterns for the Lake include:

Size 6-10 Girdle Bugs in black, yellow, white, or flourescent green
Size 6-10 Bitch Creek Nymphs
Size 6-10 Montana Nymphs, including variations with flourescent green thoraxi. <<< someone tell me- is this a word??? ;-)
Size 6-10 Wooly Worms in black or brown, and silver chenille body, with grizzly hackle- I actually use metallic silver pipe cleaners- the wire core adds some weight, and they are very durable.
Size 6-10 Wooly buggers in black, brown, olive, metallic green( once again, I use pipe cleaners) white, and flourescent green.
